7 Free Image Websites for Your Next Project
We have all been there — working on the project only to realize midway that you need to find images ASAP. Thanks to the wonderful people all over the internet, and the rise of the open-source community, it’s now easier than ever to find the images you need for your next great project.
In Today’s post, I am bringing you a list of 7 free to use image websites, where you will be able to find images that you can freely use in your graphic or web development project.
Important note: Make sure to read the terms and conditions of each site you use, so you know exactly when and what type of attribution is required. Most of these sites offer images under Creative Commons licensing, but for any out of the ordinary use, make sure to consult the respective web site’s policy.
What is Creative Commons?
Creative Commons is a nonprofit organization created to help artists more easily share their work. It enables the sharing and use of creativity and knowledge through free legal tools. Different types of Creative Commons licenses range from allowing any type of use with no attribution necessary to allowing only certain uses and no changes to files.
What is the public domain?
Works in the public domain are those whose copyrights have expired, have been forfeited, or are inapplicable. Finding something on the internet does not mean it is in the public domain, so make sure to always double-check before using the image.
What is royalty-free?
Royalty-free images aren’t necessarily free. In most cases, you’ll have to pay a one-time fee to obtain the rights to use the image. Then you can use it as many times as you like. The “free” in “royalty-free” only means that you do not have to pay royalties to the owner of the image every time you use it.
1) Pexels
One of the best-known free image (and videos) websites is Pexels. By providing free stock photos Pexels helps millions of creators all over the world to easily create beautiful products and designs. All photos and videos on Pexels are free to use and attribution is not required. Giving credit to the photographer or Pexels is not necessary but always appreciated. The great thing about Pexels is that You can modify the photos and videos, be creative and edit them as you please.
2) Unsplash
Another great free images website is Unsplash. With a collection of over 2 million free high-resolution images and over 211,166 photographer members, it is one of the biggest websites and communities of its kind. All photos can be downloaded and used for free, for both Commercial and non-commercial purposes. Even though attribution isn’t required, Unsplash photographers appreciate it as it provides exposure to their work and encourages them to continue sharing.
3) Burst
Burst is a free stock photo platform for entrepreneurs by Shopify. The images are both free and royalty-free. Burst has a cool section of business ideas where you can choose from over 20 online business ideas that are particularly popular this year. Each in-depth case study includes supplier info, marketing tips, business model insights, and free high-resolution images for your store and marketing campaigns.
4) Pixabay
All of the images on Pixabay are licensed under Creative Commons Zero (CC0). That means you can use them without asking for permission or giving credit to the artist (though it is always appreciated). Pixabay images are user-provided — you can choose to support the artists through PayPal donations if you choose to do so.
5) Stocksnap.io
Stocksnap uses the Creative Commons CC0 license so its photos are free to download, edit, and use for both commercial and non-commercial projects.
6) Canva
Canva is an online graphic design tool that also offers free stock photos. One advantage of using Canva is that you can quickly turn an image into a custom graphic to use on social media or your blog post.
7) Death to Stock
Unlike most websites mentioned in this post, Death to Stock does not have a gallery of images. It sends you 20 new photos every month when you sign up for its newsletter. The basic idea of the founders was to provide high resolution and beautiful royalty-free images for everyone. As a premium member, you also help to finance further photo trips and projects to make more great stock photos, which are then made available to the community for free. Here you will find pictures that have not necessarily been used 1000 times and you can stand out with your own picture language.
